Pregnancy is often painted in glowing colors, beautiful belly bumps, excited smiles, baby showers, and ultrasound pictures. But behind those joyful moments, many expectant mothers quietly battle fears and anxieties they feel too ashamed to voice. Believing women often wrestle with these fears and thoughts in silence, weighed down by the fear of being seen as unspiritual. But hear this; you are not unspiritual.
Thoughts like:
Will the baby be healthy?
Will I be strong enough for labor?
What if something goes wrong?
How will my body handle this?
Am I ready for this huge responsibility?
What kind of world am I bringing this child into?
If you’ve ever had any of these thoughts, you are not alone. I know pregnancy can feel like a rollercoaster of emotions, joyful highs, sudden dips of worry, and unexpected turns of uncertainty. But in all of this, God is ever with you and His word remains sure.
You’re Not Weak for Feeling Fear
Honestly? feeling afraid doesn’t make you faithless. It just makes you human. What matters is what you do with that fear. Elijah, the bold, fiery prophet who called down fire from heaven and stood fearlessly before hundreds of false prophets, felt the stings of fear. And not just any fear, the kind that makes you want to disappear. And this was right after one of the biggest victories of his life in 1 Kings 18; one threatening message from Queen Jezebel and ran for his life, he literally ‘picked race’.
This is one of the things I appreciate about the scriptures, it doesn’t hide the humanity of even its greatest heroes. If Elijah could face fear, then we shouldn’t be ashamed when it knocks on our own doors. Fear can come for anyone even the most spiritual people we honour. The comfort in this scripture is that God didn’t rebuke Elijah harshly. In fact, He met him gently, with food, rest, and a still small voice (1 Kings 19:12).
God doesn’t shame us for our fears, He calls us to bring them to Him. Over and over in Scripture, we are told “Do not fear” not as a command to ignore our emotions, but as an invitation to lean into His strength. 2 Timothy 1:7 says “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” When fear creeps in, speak this scripture over yourself. Remind your heart that God didn’t design you to be ruled by fear, but to walk in power, love, and soundness of mind.
Trust God With What You Can’t Control
One of the scariest things about pregnancy is the sheer number of things outside your control. From the development of your baby to the unpredictability of labor, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. But Isaiah 41:10 says “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”
Someone once said, “Fear means False Evidence Appearing Real.” I couldn’t agree more with this statement. Fear often thrives on things that aren’t true, the many imagined “what-ifs” that haven’t happened yet. It makes us believe that danger is imminent, when in reality, it may be a scenario that only exists in our minds.
As expectant mothers, it’s easy to let fear run wild in our hearts, especially with the many unknowns during pregnancy. From concerns about your baby’s health, to fears about labor, or anxieties about the future, most of those fears are based on false evidence. Fear distorts the truth and magnifies uncertainties, making them seem more real than they truly are. Fear focuses on the “seen”, the temporary, the immediate, and the visible uncertainties. But by faith, we look at the “unseen”, at God’s promises, His goodness, and His ability to bring His plans to pass. As you surrender every fear to Him, what may seem terrifying right now will be replaced with the reality of God’s faithfulness
The truth is that God’s truth is not based on circumstances or emotions that come and go. His Word is steadfast and trustworthy, regardless of what we see in the natural. The fear of what could go wrong doesn’t have to dominate your thoughts.
2 Corinthians 4:18 says “we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.”
You are not alone; God is with you, in the midnight worries, at the hospital check-ups, in labor. So, by faith, you speak life over what seems impossible and believe for the best outcome, no matter what. Faith is not about denying your reality; it’s about choosing to believe that God is bigger than your fears and that His Word holds more weight than the fears or circumstances you face. You may not have all the answers or certainty, but you can have peace knowing that God is in control, and He is faithful to fulfill His plans for your life and your child.
Choosing Faith Over Fear, by The Word of God
You have the responsibility of choosing what to think on and what not to. Many times during my pregnancy journey, the doctor’s reports weren’t always encouraging, but I chose not to dwell on them. Was I afraid? Yes, many times, in fact. But as many times as I was afraid, I spoke to God about it and declared His Word over and above the doctor’s reports. I chose not to worry. Philippians 4:6 says “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.”
The closer you get to delivery, the more intentional you must be about surrendering every thought, every hope, and every fear to God. You don’t need a truckload of faith, just one as small as a mustard seed (Matthew 17:20). That’s enough. Each time fear tries to creep in, don’t let it linger. Don’t entertain it. Cast it out quicker than it came. Scripture says we are to take every thought that exalts itself above the knowledge of God captive and pull it down (2 Corinthians 10:5). You don’t do this with high-sounding words or words that simply make you feel good; you do it with the Word of God.
Don’t let fear be the last thing you dwell on. Let thoughts of faith and words of faith fill your heart instead. And as you do, you’ll find that the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your heart and mind in Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:7).
This is where the power lies. You don’t have to suppress your fears; you acknowledge them and then bring them to God. God is bigger than any diagnosis, any complication, and any fear. When you lay them at His feet, He fills you with peace that defies all human understanding.
