“But He answered and said, ‘It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’” (Matthew 4:4)
There was a time I got busy, busy with God’s work, yet strangely distant from God’s Word. I prayed here and there, but my Bible remained closed. It wasn’t long before I noticed how easily tired I became. No matter how much I slept, I woke up drained. My body was restless, my energy was gone, and even simple tasks around the house was overwhelming.
One morning, I woke up at 3:30 a.m. unable to sleep. I reached for my Bible and began to read. I stayed there, reading till 7 a.m., completely lost in the Word. I literally ate it ravenously. I didn’t even realise how hungry I really was.
When I finally stood up, I began cleaning the house, and by 8:17 a.m, I looked at the time and was shocked to see I had nearly finished all the cleaning I needed to do. That was when I paused and wondered where all that strength had come from. Then I heard it clearly in my spirit: “Where do you think? You ate gooood, real food.”
I thought, Ohhh! What I had been feeling wasn’t just physical tiredness, it was the hunger of a starving soul. I wasn’t merely longing for God; I was famished. I had been hungry for days, yet I hadn’t eaten.
In the natural, that would be considered a medical crisis, a kind of self-starvation. As beneficial as fasting is, if a person refuses to eat indefinitely, they will grow weak, lean, and eventually die. Spiritually, it’s no different.
Yet, like many of us, I was expecting strength without nourishment, the peace of God outside His presence, and clarity of mind and purpose without communion with Him.
When we neglect the Word of God, our souls starve. The symptoms soon appear in our moods, our focus, our motivation, and even our bodies. But the moment we feed on the Word, life returns. The Word revives what sleep and food cannot restore.
Jesus said, “The words I have spoken to you, they are full of the Spirit and life” (John 6:63). The Bible is not just a book, it is food. It is strength to the weary, clarity to the confused, and rest to the restless soul.
So, if lately you’ve been feeling weak or weary, maybe the issue isn’t just physical. Maybe your soul is hungry.
When last did you truly sit down to eat from the Bible, God’s word? When last did a verse feel like food to your soul, something that filled you so completely that you could sense life and joy rising again within you?
You were not designed to live feeding once in two days, or a week, or a month. Those Sunday-Sunday meals are slowly killing you. Your spirit cannot thrive on leftovers or one meal a week. Just as the body grows weak without daily food, the soul withers when it’s only fed occasionally. You can’t even survive on yesterday’s Word. You need to go back to the table daily to eat. There’s fresh bread waiting for you. Your strength, peace, and vitality flow from the Word of God. Eat well spiritually and watch how life returns to every weary and tired part of you.
“My son, give attention to my words; incline your ear to my sayings.
Do not let them depart from your eyes; keep them in the midst of your heart; for they are life to those who find them, and health to all their flesh.
Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it spring the issues of life.”
(Proverbs 4:20–23)
