191 | When You Are in the World but Not of It: Carrying Joy Into Tough Workdays

He who sits in heaven laughs, I sit in heaven so I laugh… la la la la la.

Have you ever had a tough boss who seemed to thrive on pressuring you?

Some workplaces are just plain tough. It can feel like there’s always another target, another deadline, another expectation piled on top of you. Opening your email feels like visiting a typical traditional Nigerian father-in-law who has a million questions ready to prove you’re not good enough for his daughter.😅

Yet, Scripture gives us a powerful reality: we are seated in heavenly places in Christ Jesus (Ephesians 2:6), and it means exactly that.

Our spirits occupy a place of rest, authority, and victory inside Jesus Christ, even though physically, our bodies are here on earth doing all the running around.
I love the scripture that says, “But the one who rules in heaven laughs. The Lord scoffs at them.” (Psalm 2:4)

Think about it for a moment: What would it look like to carry that kind of laughter into your toughest workdays?

A few years ago, I worked at a college in Lekki that nearly drove me away from 9 to 5 forever. It was painfully demanding; the deadlines, targets, and expectations were so intense that I often woke up in a cold sweat, haunted by all the tasks waiting for me. At some point, sleeping felt like being irresponsible, and even trying to rest felt like being lazy.

Payday didn’t bring relief; it felt like our boss’s hard look was saying without words, “Do you really think you deserve this salary?”

If there’s one truth I wish I had known then, it’s that I am seated in heavenly places in Christ Jesus.
Perhaps if I had understood that reality, I would have rejoiced inwardly even when outwardly there was absolute chaos. I would have consciously drawn strength from that truth instead of letting anxiety control me.

Thankfully, even back then, God’s grace nudged me to play worship music, listen to sermons, study His Word, pray in tongues, and stay connected to a church community. But I wish I had realized those actions weren’t just good habits; they were exactly how you intentionally received strength from God.

If I had known this clearly, maybe instead of escaping to the restroom to cry, I would have intentionally locked the door, turned up worship music, charged myself in tongues, and walked back out filled with renewed strength and courage; you know… feeling like those lions we see in videos that are on fire from praying in the Spirit.

That’s exactly why I’m writing this now, so that you know clearly what I wish I’d known then.

This is how you practically draw strength:

  • Keep worship music playing softly in your workspace.
  • Play scriptures audibly in the background when possible.
  • Take every ten or fifteen minutes you can find to read your Bible.
  • Pray under your breathe in the Spirit as you navigate your daily tasks.
  • Take time to meditate on scriptures so that your mind is continually renewed and stayed on God. This way, your heart is kept in peace even when chaos surrounds you.

Always remember: you’re seated in heavenly places in Christ Jesus, and from that place, you can face any storm your workday throws at you.
